I work a lot. Most of my adult life, I’ve had a few jobs, and usually work overtime… It’s not really because I love to work 24/7 – It’s because I like the variety of new challenges and change. And I also have generally a lot of energy.
Over the last year, I’d slowed down quite a bit – two jobs, but really only a full-time job all put together. I was spending time gardening and cooking and taking pretty good care of myself and my family. I had found a simpler groove. But the last month, I’ve been working too much again… not really my choice this time, either. My garden has been suffering, and it hasn’t been great for training a new puppy!
This past weekend, work finally slowed down and I decided to take two days off. Friday after work, my husband dumped his exhausted body onto the passenger seat of our truck and we drove off into the dark to Ellison Park, near Vernon. A quiet supper, 13 hours of sleep and a hike with the dogs later, we felt refreshed and revigorated.
- Roughing it with his copy of Wine Spectator
- I love getting away on 15 minutes notice!
- It’s a big world for a small dog.
- Maggie teachng the trick to the leash.
- His first time seeing a big waterbowl!
- He was like a little raccoon in the water. SO cute!
- It was a grey but beautiful day on Okanagan Lake.
When we got back Saturday afternoon, we went for a coffee, shopped for shoes for J, and spent another quiet evening, this one at home, watching a good movie. Sunday I got to hang around the house, try a new French stew receipe, baked some German Zuckerkuchen, drank loads of herbal tea and a couple glasses of wine, played with the dogs, read a book cover to cover, (Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears… really good,) and saw an evening movie (Religulous – ) at the theatre with Jrock.
I could get used to this….

Don’t get too used to it! You’re referral is coming and once those kiddos are home, you’ll wonder what it’s like to actually read a book in a couple of books let alone a day!
Glad I found your blog.
I’m with Courtney on this…. man, when you said you slept 13 hours I practically wept with envy. It’s a wonderful change, but it’s a hard change. And pretty soon you guys will be experiencing it. Come on referral!
Sounds nice and relaxing, just what a person on this process needs!
Did I write read a book in a couple of books let alone a day???? Nicky, this is what happens when you try to get by on 4 hours of sleep because the little ones think that its fun to torture their mama and wake up every few hours. You end up writing things that don’t make sense. Enjoy the 13 hours of sleep- try to get as many nights of those as you possibly can!
It is a challenge trying to fnd the right balance of work and play…
last year I had 5 different jobs (P/t but together they made up more than a full time). This year I am cutting back and enjoying life more. Hence me being home at 10am reading blogs (-:

Gotta love the Bigfoot pic..my family are the founders!
It’s great to get away from it all and take some time for yourself isn’t it? We all need time to regroup for this roller-coaster ride! I echo the responses, things will get preetty busy once the kids are home!
lol – Courtney – I knew what you meant!
Tracey – if your family are founders.. maybe you live closeby? Since the Co is from Armstrong or something, isn’t it? If you are in the neighborhood, you should check out our group: http://okanaganfamilieswithchildrenfromafrica.wordpress.com
PS. We love the trailer – even if it’s older than we are!
PS.
We call him “Gordon.”
Gordon Bigfoot.
lol
13 hours of sleep! Lucky ducky! I’m happy when I get 8 now… Sofia only sleeps for 11.
Also you fit more into Sunday than I do in a whole weekend. Your kids are so lucky to have such an energetic mother!
Thanks for pointing me to your links! It’s funny, you get so bizzy reading and you forget to really look what people might have on their blogs!

Yes, the plant is in Armstrong. Although I have family in Vernon and Kelowna we are down in North Van. I do get up a couple times a year so who knows, one of my visits might coincide with a event with you!
I love that you have named the trailer..too funny! I will pass this along to my sister, she will get a kick out of it!!
